BELKIN CONSERVE
Stops Power-Wasting Electronics
You may not realize it, but your TV, DVD player, computer, printer, and other electronics are likely wasting electricity when you’re not using them, just because you keep them plugged in. It’s called standby power, or phantom power, and the California Energy Commission says it represents 15 percent of a household’s electricity use.
Unfortunately, reaching below desks or behind television equipment to unplug your electronics isn’t always practical. But there’s a solution: the Belkin Conserve surge protector.
Equipped with eight outlets, the Belkin Conserve works much like any other surge protector, except that this protector comes with a handy remote control. Use the remote to completely and easily shut off the power to devices that would otherwise consume standby power. The Conserve has two “always on” outlets that allow you to operate devices that typically need to stay on. The remote can be mounted on a wall and works within a 60-foot range.
Instead of throwing batteries in the trash, take them to a toxic waste disposal area or a participating recycler. Discarded batteries produce most of the heavy metals—lead, arsenic, zinc, cadmium, copper and mercury—found in household trash. In landfills, those hazardous metals can contaminate groundwater and eventually make their way into the food chain.
