Volunteering Is Very Green!
Want to lend a hand in building affordable housing that’s also green? There are many opportunities to volunteer for organizations devoted to housing folks in need. Here are a few suggestions. Habitat for Humanity. Based in Atlanta but with affiliate offices across the country and around the world, this well known organization gives volunteers the opportunity to build and rehab houses for families who otherwise would go without adequate shelter. www.habitat.org
Builders without Borders. In existence since 1999, BWB is an international network of builders who promote and demonstrate the use of straw, earth, and other local, affordable materials in construction. BWB organizes hands-on workshops and partners with other organizations to build affordable sustainable housing. Past projects have taken place in the United States as well as in Mexico, Israel, South Africa, and Siberia. www.builderswithoutborders.org
Common Ground. Founded in response to the devastation of Hurricane Katrina, this organization’s mission is to provide short-term relief for victims of natural disasters in the Gulf Coast region and long-term support in rebuilding affected communities in and around New Orleans. www.commongroundrelief.org
A green house will have more insulation than local building codes require. In fact, it should have enough extra insulation to be at least 15 to 20 percent more energy efficient than a standard code compliant house, according to Energy Star guidelines.
